Apple has released a series of new artificial intelligence models optimized to work on the company's devices. As The Verge writes, this step indicates Apple's intentions to implement AI locally on the iPhone and other gadgets.
A series of four small language models, called OpenELM, according to the company, efficiently perform tasks related to text, such as writing e-mails. The models are open and ready for use by developers. The small models are cheaper to operate and are optimized for devices such as phones and laptops.
Thus, Apple takes another step towards integrating AI into its products. The company previously introduced MLX, a machine learning framework optimized for Apple Silicon, as well as models for image editing (MGIE) and smartphone navigation (Ferret-UI).
While Apple has already released other AI models, they don't offer basic, basic models like their competitors, and the company is rumored to have approached Google and OpenAI to add their AI models to their devices.
