Dr Richard Fox, the company's head of science, notes that butterfly numbers have dropped by 80 percent since the 1970s.. Therefore, measures must be taken to protect them, and the best way is to stop the practice of regularly mowing lawns.
The study, carried out over six years in more than 600 gardens across the UK, found that in gardens with long grass, butterfly counts were 93 per cent higher in rural areas and 18 per cent higher than in urban areas. This is because tall grass provides insects with more places to feed and breed.
In addition, ivy blooms can also help increase the numbers of certain butterfly species, such as blue holly, by providing them with shelter and a source of nectar.

Even a small patch of tall grass or flowering ivy can attract butterflies to your garden. This is a simple and free way to help increase butterfly numbers, especially in urban and agricultural settings where the insects are most vulnerable.
The study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, highlights the importance of creating wild spaces and encourages everyone to take part in the process to conserve butterflies and other insects.
