Boston Dynamics discontinued the Atlas hydraulic robot and introduced an all-electric model with the same name. This is stated in their blog.
The hydraulic robot of the latest generation (HD Atlas) could already lift and maneuver a wide range of heavy objects of irregular shape. But the electric version will be more powerful, stronger and more agile, the company says.
And although the developers emphasize human-likeness, in the end, the new model has a wider range of motion, which will “exceed human capabilities”. What exactly is meant, you can learn from the video. In it, the robot gets up from the floor in a different way than a human does.
Boston Dynamics says it can create a robot that will solve “boring, dirty and dangerous tasks in real-world environments.”
The new Atlas is a commercial project, but the company has not yet revealed all the specifications and the price. Trial operation of humanoids will begin at the plant of the automaker Hyundai, which bought a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021, the value of the deal was $1.1 billion.
In addition to Atlas, the company also has other models — Spot and Stretch. They have been equipped with new artificial intelligence and machine learning tools, such as reinforcement learning and computer vision, “so they can work effectively and adapt to complex real-world situations,” the blog says.
And recently launched Orbit software. It provides a centralized platform for managing the entire fleet of robots, site maps and digital transformation data. For now, it's available for Spot, but Stretch and Atlas will also be integrated.
