The funeral ceremony began at about 11 a.m. in St. Michael's Golden-Domed Cathedral. Therefore, despite the bad weather and the air raid warning, the streets nearby were completely filled with people. Among those present in the temple were ordinary Ukrainians and famous personalities.
In particular, former President Petro Poroshenko, singer Oleg Skrypka, actor and military man Akhtem Seytablaev, Roksolana Khmara, the widow of the recently deceased Ukrainian writer Stepan Khmara, came to say goodbye.
To honor the memory of the late writer, people traditionally brought many flowers: red tulips, white roses, carnations in the yellow-blue colors of the Ukrainian flag.
Vitaly Kapranov was wearing a black embroidered shirt with embroidery. He barely held back tears when his brother was seen off for the last time.. Both men and women cried today.
During the funeral service, the priest noted Dmitry’s great contribution to the development of the Ukrainian language, literature and the church.
– He did a lot of good things for the whole of Ukraine. Dmitry was born to tell the truth about history and revive it. In order for the Ukrainian word to sound in Ukraine and there to be a Ukrainian book. He was a representative of the intelligentsia, so we cannot even appreciate the greatness of this loss, said the father.
Later the ceremony continued at the Baikovo cemetery. Here, in the large hall, relatives proclaimed their last words in memory of Dmitry. Relatives, friends and colleagues in the pen remembered his kind and bright soul, creative perseverance, ardent love for Ukraine and tireless work for the benefit of the people. Everyone whose life paths crossed with Dmitry tried to tell some interesting or funny story related to his name.
As Dmitry’s relatives told Telegraph, the writer decided to be cremated. However, due to the long queue at the crematorium, the burial will take place in approximately a week.
Let us remind you that the Kapranov brothers were born in 1967 in the city of Dubosary, present-day Moldova.. Childhood and youth were spent in Ochakov, Nikolaev region. They received their higher education in Russia, and in 1988, having married twin sisters, they moved to Moscow. There in the early 90s there was a powerful Ukrainian diaspora movement, which the brothers joined, publishing the newspaper “Tyndy-Ryndy” and the Ukrainian fiction magazine “Brothers”.
In 1998, the Kapranovs returned to Ukraine and settled in Kyiv, where they published their first book, “Kobzar 2000”. They explained their return by the inability to fully realize themselves as creative people in Russia.
In 2019, the brothers created their YouTube channel “Imeni T. D. Shevchenko”, which talks about the history of Ukraine. In this way they managed to popularize Ukrainian history and culture among young people.
Since February 24, 2022, from the very beginning of the Russian invasion, the Kapranovs took up arms and fought the occupiers as part of the Azov regiment.
