Social network X (Twitter) started selling names of inactive users for $50,000.
Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, is looking for new ways to increase revenue. Now the company sells the names of inactive users at a price of $50,000.
Potential residents of the platform began receiving emails with offers with a fixed amount, according to Forbes.
The internal X team @HandleTeam is working on the project. It should create a platform for trading forgotten usernames. There are rumors that the company plans to introduce such a program in a few months.
The idea of selling usernames was there before
Back in November 2022, the owner of X, Elon Musk, wrote that a large number of accounts on the social network are used by bots and trolls. Then he also announced his intention to “free” such pages.
In response to this post, a user suggested a Handle Marketplace where people could sell accounts to each other. However, the publication could not determine whether such a platform exists now.
According to the social network's policy, users must visit their page at least once every 30 days to keep their accounts active.
Musk bought the social network last year. Since then, it has undergone many changes, which were often not liked by either users or investors. Despite this, the businessman continues to implement his plans and create an “app for everything”. Previously, he stated that he wants to turn X into a payment service and transfer the entire financial life of users there. The social network also added the function of audio and video calls. However, no one asked for this. In addition, the social network does not hesitate to block the pages of people who do not agree with its policies. Yes, the platform recently banned a programmer who conducted research on bots and disinformation in X.
