The inhabitants of the Earth will soon witness an interesting astronomical phenomenon. The Leonids meteor shower will peak, with about 15 meteors expected per hour at its zenith.
The Moscow Planetarium said:
We observe the autumn starfall from the constellation Leo in the morning of November 17-18 above the eastern horizon.
The Leonid meteor shower lasts almost the entire month – from November 3 to November 30, 2023. The Leonids are the most famous meteor shower.. It has been known for over 3,800 years and is named after the constellation Leo, in which its radiant is located.. It seems that sparkling meteors are flying out of this constellation. These are very bright and fast white meteors that fly into the Earth's atmosphere at a speed of 70 km/s.
To successfully observe “shooting stars”, a cloudless sky and no lunar backlight are highly desirable.. Observation conditions for Leonid in 2023 are favorable. The moon is close to first quarter and will not interfere with meteor viewing on the night of the peak. Leonid meteors can be observed in clear weather from midnight until dawn above the eastern horizon.
